I push a mountain
ENG
I push a mountain is the third encounter of Antigone Divided. Staged on 20 December 2019 at Salt Beyoğlu, Istanbul, within A Corner in the World’s 29′59″ selection, it is a twenty-minute performance created together, in the moment, by dancer Bengi Sevim and creative musicians Başak Yavuz and Hasan Yoksulabakan. Pianist Ayca Daştan contributed to the rehearsal process.
The mountain is patriarchy: it is everything that is placed in front of a woman. At times it is law, at times custom, at times family, at times the command of a state. It is invisible to those who do not come up against it; only the one who pushes knows it is there. Antigone does not expect it to move, and she pushes anyway. For resistance is not measured by whether the mountain moves; it is the pushing itself. That is why the title is in the first person and the present tense: she is the one who pushes, and the pushing goes on.
No moment of those twenty minutes was written in advance. Against Creon’s decree Antigone defends the unwritten laws; this encounter, too, leaned on nothing written. The three artists created the work in the moment; each built their music or movement there and then, and answered the other two there and then. Bengi Sevim carried the pushing in her dance. Başak Yavuz, a jazz musician, used her voice, her instruments and her whole body, as a performer who sings and takes action. Hasan Yoksulabakan both created and played the sound of the moment on an electric cello. So the pushing did not stay in a single body; it passed from movement to voice, from voice to string. The staging was plain: there was no lighting design and nothing that creates illusion.

I push a mountain, Antigone Divided’ın üçüncü buluşmasıdır. 20 Aralık 2019’da İstanbul’da, Salt Beyoğlu’nda, A Corner in the World’ün 29′59″ seçkisi kapsamında sahnelenen iş, dansçı Bengi Sevim ile yaratıcı müzisyenler Başak Yavuz ve Hasan Yoksulabakan’ın anda birlikte yarattıkları yirmi dakikalık bir performanstır. Eserin prova sürecine piyanist Ayca Daştan da katkıda bulundu.
Dağ ataerkidir: bir kadının önüne konulan her şeydir. Kimi zaman yasa, kimi zaman gelenek, kimi zaman aile, kimi zaman devletin buyruğudur.
